Split your names into fair teams.
Paste your names, choose how many teams, and everyone gets shuffled and dealt out evenly. No sign-up, works on any device.
Press "Make teams" to split 8 names into 2 teams of 4.
How it works
- 1
Add your names
Paste one per line or separated by commas. Duplicates can be removed automatically.
- 2
Choose how many teams
Step up or down. The summary tells you the team sizes before you commit, so you can see whether the split comes out even.
- 3
Make teams
Everyone is shuffled and dealt out evenly. Shuffle again for a different arrangement, or copy a link that rebuilds these exact teams.
Made for classrooms, sports and workshops
Teachers splitting a class into groups, coaches making sides for a game, and anyone running a workshop who needs tables assigned without an argument about who picked whom. Same picker engine as the wheel, so the shuffle is unbiased and reproducible.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up, no app to install, and no limit on how many times you shuffle.
Are the teams actually random, or does it favour the order I typed?
The order you type in does not matter. Every name is shuffled first, using the same picker engine as the wheel, and only then dealt out into teams.
The shuffle is a Fisher-Yates shuffle driven by a seeded generator, with rejection sampling so no position on your list is favoured. Names are then dealt round-robin, so team sizes stay balanced and every possible even split is equally likely.
The shuffle is also seeded, which means it is reproducible: the share link carries that seed, so anyone you send it to rebuilds the exact same teams rather than getting a fresh random split.
What if my names do not divide evenly?
They do not need to. Sizes are balanced to within one person, and the extra people go to the lowest-numbered teams. Eleven names across three teams gives you 4, 4 and 3.
Can I get a different set of teams?
Yes. "Shuffle again" reshuffles everyone into a completely new arrangement.
Can I share the teams I generated?
Yes. "Copy share link" produces a link that contains the names, the number of teams, and the seed, so it rebuilds the identical teams for whoever opens it. Nothing is uploaded to a server; it all lives in the link itself.
